Depth Work in a Band-Aid World

What does it mean to do depth work in a band-aid world? Depth means leaving a wound open. Healing occurs by allowing what is within oneself to be fully experienced. Our culture, to the contrary, distributes band-aids. Solutions are applied externally that provide temporary relief, but the deeper meaning at the heart of the wound is lost.

Depth work is not focused on solution. It follows the innate capacity of the psyche to direct change. How one experiences healing is unique and does not necessarily adhere to cultural guidelines. It requires faith in a process that is a mystery. It requires suspending judgment of oneself and of others, and it requires suffering. Not every one should undertake depth work, and not every situation requires it. However, when it arises as a possibility and when one is able to follow this possibility, then all of us in this band-aid world benefit from the courage of those who choose to open more deeply.
